Review & How To: The Instyler MAX

**Full Disclosure: I received the Instyler Max  for free however I was not required to do a blog post about it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I’m going to be completely honest here – I was totally unsure of the Instyler Max at first – not because it seemed like an untrustworthy tool (it has fabulous reviews online!) but because I’ve barely mastered a regular curling iron and this one seemed a bit intimidating to me! Nevertheless, the fact that people were raving about it and that it can curl AND straighten hair intrigued me and I decided to give it a go…

Some basics about the actual tool: The technology behind it is that because of the bristles and the 2 way circular rotating iron, it makes your hair sleek & smooth, eliminating frizz & it’s able to give you more volume if desired. Because the iron rotates, it distributes heat evenly and effectively and is less likely to damage your hair – which is personally important to me!

Curling With The Instyler Max

I was definitely most interested in the curling aspect of this tool as that is pretty much how I always wear my hair. I’ve been using the same method with my Hot Tools1 1/4 inch wand for about a year or so, so I was curious on how the InStyler Max would differ in terms of process and result…

I typically wash my hair in the evening and then let it just air-dry over night. In the morning it usually has a bed-head/texture-y kind of look…

After spraying a heat protectant on my hair (I’m currently using Tresemme Thermal Creations Heat Tamer Spray), I take the amount of hair I want to curl and wrap it around the round barrel (as I would a normal curling iron). Then clamp the brush on to the barrel (by just pressing it down as you would a flat iron) and the barrel will automatically start rotating. Hold it in place for a few seconds (it will depend on how thick your hair is and the amount of hair you are curling). Then, unclamp and release the hair (the rotating iron will automatically stop when you unclamp and release the hair) And that’s pretty much all there is to it! No twisting, twirling – just grab another section and go…

For this particular look I also curled every piece of hair away from my face. To switch up the direction the barrel roles – double clamp the brush to the barrel! When the barrel is rolling in the direction from the root to tip of your hair, it will create the smoothest look.

Review & How To: The Instyler MAXIt definitely was a little faster than using a regular curling iron but the main thing I noticed with this in particular was that the result was more voluminous bouncy waves/curls (rather than the messier/’beachier’ look I create with my regular iron). I was pleasantly surprised by how easy this was to achieve as well! I give it a thumbs up and a pretty alternative to my usual ‘do!

Straightening With The InStyler Max

While I rarely straighten my hair (maybe once every few months), I did want to use this as a straightener before I gave you all a proper review!

For this look I also started with overnight air-dried hair – and for the record this was a different day – I just wore the same black shirt…

Don’t forget to use a heat protectant!Review & How To: The Instyler MAX
For straightening with the InStyler Max, you just clamp down on your strands and pull through as you would a regular straightening iron. Again, as soon you clamp down on your hair the barrel will rotate!

And voila! I love that the InStyler Max gives me volume even when you straighten!

Key Takeaways: The InStyler Max works SO well for both curling and straightening AND creates very soft and feminine looks! At $99, it IS more expensive than the average drugstore tool, but you ARE getting two tools in one – plus it seems much better for your hair than other heat tools!

Anyway, I hope you liked this little review! Have a wonderful weekend & thanks for reading!
