There are those pieces in your wardrobe that will always have a special place. The ones that mean something and you remember exactly where you got it and why you couldn’t leave without it. I have a bunch of those pieces and you’ve probably seen most of them repeatedly on my blog.
I got the book I Love Your Style by Amanda Brooks for Christmas many years ago and poured through the whole thing in one day. I learned so much from it and discovered so many unbelievably stylish women that I’d never really known about before. I saw a picture of Charlotte Rampling in a tweed blazer and instantly became obsessed with it. I was living in Cambridge at the time right near Harvard and it just seemed like a natural piece to have in my closet. I searched online for one and while I saw a few, most were too expensive for me at the time. One weekend I was wandering around the neighborhood and popped in a vintage/thrift store called the Raspberry Beret. Among the racks I spotted this tweed blazer with elbow patches. It was love at first sight and I just hoped it would be the right size. It was. It was $45 and I took it home with me. It’s such a classic piece and I absolutely love everything from the mix of neutrals in the tweed, to the elbow patches, to the fit. I’ll never get rid of it.
These boots are Ralph Lauren and they were pretty much my first “designer piece”. I was home from college on winter break and my sisters and my mom and I were wandering around the mall – me with some Christmas money burning a hole in my pocket. I was in need of some boots and I had my heart set on some classic riding boots “that went with everything”. We walked into DSW and I immediately went to the sale aisles in the back of the store. In the size 7 aisle I saw these brown boots and they were exactly what I was picturing. They were $100 on sale which was a lot for me – still is – but I knew I would get so much wear out of them and in the end the cost would be worth it. Then I saw the exact same boots in black in 7.5. I was torn – I loved both and knew they’d both be staples in my wardrobe. I went back and forth for maybe a half hour until my mom said – get both – you’ll get so much use out of them. I hesitated but ultimately went up to the cash register with both pairs of boots and my heart skipped a beat as I handed over my credit card. It’s 8 years later and while the black pair only lasted 5 years (they got ruined in the snow in Boston one year) my brown pair is still going strong. I don’t see them going anywhere soon either – I still love them so much.
This vintage Gucci backpack was a gift from my mom which is funny because my mom is not into fashion, style, designers and truth be told, at the time, I didn’t even think she knew what Gucci was. And maybe she didn’t, my sister Becky was with her. Being the oldest and the first child to enter “the real world” I missed a few family vacations due to work. One of the trips was a skiing trip in New Hampshire and I was pretty bummed I couldn’t go. I can’t remember what the scenario was exactly but they were putzing around this small little town in NH and were perusing a thrift store when they spotted this backpack for a steal. I’d given up backpacks in High School (and they weren’t “in style” like they are now) but I think they just knew I’d love and appreciate it – and I did. It might not be the traditional vacation souvenir but it meant so much to me that they were thinking of me and that my interest in fashion and style didn’t go unnoticed by them. It’s a special piece and will always have a place in my closet.
